What makes walking in the Schoorlse Duinen special?

Here, you walk through several landscapes in one nature reserve. Beyond the trees, the dunes open out, with the North Sea further on. Staatsbosbeheer describes more than 60 kilometres of walking paths in the highest dune area in the Netherlands. From your holiday home in Warmenhuizen, come here for a day of walking and fresh air.

You climb and descend, sometimes walking through sand. This makes a walk more demanding than the same distance on a level path. Consider the terrain when choosing a route.

Where do you start a walk in Schoorl?

You can start at Buitencentrum Schoorlse Duinen at Oorsprongweg 1, 1871 HA Schoorl. Walking routes and activities start here. The official Noordzeewandeling route map (PDF) also gives the approach via Heereweg 62, opposite the turn into Oorsprongweg.

Save the route map on your phone before leaving DuinDromen. Follow the trail markers and entrance signs along the way. Your route planner shows the current journey time to the visitor centre.

The Noordzeewandeling: 10 kilometres through dunes and woodland

The Boswachterspad Noordzeewandeling is 10 kilometres long and starts at the visitor centre. The route map includes the steps to the highest dune, the bird lake, the beach and the Waterbosvlakte. Allow time for this walk, especially if you want to stop for the view or at the beach. View the route and highlights at Staatsbosbeheer.

Just want some fresh air, or walking with young children? Choose a shorter walk at the visitor centre.

With children, a dog or a wheelchair

Dogs are welcome. From 1 March to 1 September they must be on a lead; outside that period, they may be off the lead under voice control, except where other rules apply. There are exceptions in grazing areas. Read the current visitor information and follow the signs on site.

Walking is allowed on official paths. For children, Staatsbosbeheer lists places including the Speelkuil and Groeter Zandgat where leaving the path is allowed. Paved cycle paths are accessible to wheelchair users, but the manager recommends assistance because of the slopes. Bear the climbs and descents in mind when choosing your route.

  • Choose a route everyone can manage.
  • Bring water, something to eat and clothing for wind or rain.
  • Save the route map on your phone before leaving.
  • Check the access signs at the entrance.
